Lay Aside Every Weight

Lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset you.

Every time I heard this verse for many years, I equated that word- weight -to mean sin.

One day in Sunday school, our teacher read that verse and the Holy Spirit reminded me of some things that had been weighing me down…

Not sinful things…

Or tangible things…

But it was a weight that was besetting me.

It was the weight of other people’s opinions about what I needed to be saying/doing/looking like in order to be a “good Christian”.

“Follow ME, and I will make you fishers of men.”

My personality is such that I love a good rule! Rules and regulations are great structure for me.

But I can get caught up in following what “I’m supposed to be/do” according to man, while neglecting direct commandments from God…

It had become a weight to me.

With the Lords help, Holy Spirit leading…I was able to let go of a lot of things that were hindering me running my race.

I have always, always loved the Lord, but now that I’ve dropped those weights, have a true relationship with Him.

Weights might be social media, lack of self- discipline, shopping, worrying too much about your house, etc.

I read a fictional example of a runner who refused to remove a garment because the crowd liked it, even though his wearing it prevented him from winning the race.

We need to make sure nothing we are doing is for the approval of the crowd.

Let’s keep our eyes on the path in front of us.
